Demolition Begins at St. Joseph Church [VIDEO]

A portion of the former convent building behind St. Joseph Church came down Thursday afternoon.

The demolition of St. Joseph Church kicked off Wednesday as demo crews worked to reduce the building that used to house the church's convent to rubble.

The convent and ajoined church are being torn down to make way for a development that is expected to include 51 apartments, as well as community and retail space.

In 2004, during a reconsolidation by the Archdiocese of Boston, 65 churches were closed. St. Joseph’s was among those on the list.

Only 51 units of housing for the size lot that the school, convent, rectory, and church sat on? That is an atrocity!

Just shameful. My brother was buried from this church and my other brother was married at this church. God does not like ugly and this will be remembered by many of the past congregation as a cardinal sin to tear down such a beautiful church for welfare housing.

The Catholic Church is a very successful corporation. When one of its assets isn't pulling its weight, is is terminated so as not to be detrimental to the mission of making money. Don't fool yourself by thinking anything different of the institution.
