US Senate Candidate Congressman Stephen Lynch made a couple of stops in downtown Salem Friday evening during a North Shore tour that began in Peabody and ended in the city of Lynn.

After stopping by Bingo night at St. John the Baptist Church, Lynch made his way to the Salem Fire Department where he met with city councilors and sat down with local firefighters in an upstairs breakroom.

Check out the video attached to this post for a quick look at Lynch's visit to Salem and for some remarks from the candidate.

Stephen Lynch would make an excellent choice for US Senator. Congressman Lynch was an ironworker and he understands the issues families face everyday. He'll be a strong voice for Massachusetts.

I like Lynch but he is a strong union supporter at a time when unions are very unpopular.

John I respect your message and I hear what you're saying but I'll never understand the negativity people harbor towards unions. When I think of unions police, firefighters, teachers, UPS, electricians, carpenters, ironworkers, etc come to mind. They aren't the problem. The middle class, working people need the strong voice now more than ever. I respect what he has accomplished while representing his peers and his district for decades. He is solid.

I am a retired Teamster and also agree that the union negativity is unjustified but it is real.

I am going to take a Dem ballot and vote for Lynch. Markey is everything wrong about politics in one smarmy package

No offense to the Lynch supporters here but the reason that there is so much negativity directed towards unions, particularly the public ones, is that the premium that they charge for their service is paid by the other 91% of the non-union working people in the form of higher taxes. Please remember that all government spending is taxes. If we paid public employees 30% less, a number that a recent Columbia University research paper suggested is the true market value, we could either lower taxes or buy more service.

JohnBrown, no offense taken. Public employee unions have taken their lumps but again I see it as Police, Teachers, Firefighters....some of the most important people in the community, and all taxpayers I might add. But a blanket 30% paycut for teachers, cops, firemen, etc just because someone writes a paper about it? How about a 30% cut in tuition for kids like my daughter who we pay over $50k a year for right now? I wonder what he'd say to that, lol.
