Train Collision Victim Identified as Salem Teen

The 18-year-old victim was pronounced dead at Salem Hospital.

The victim of Thursday's fatal train accident has been identified.

Dominic DeMartino, 18, of Salem was pronounced dead at Salem Hospital after the Thursday evening incident, according to the Salem News.

Passengers were evacuated from an outbound commuter rail after the incident, which occured just after 10 p.m. near Ocean Avenue and Broadway.

The MBTA Police Friday morning indicated alcohol was being investigated as a possible factor in the crash.

Could you clarify that the alcohol is on the part of the teen? We've seen issues of texting and impaired transit operators but I presume that's not what you meant?

The operator of the Commuter Rail was most definitely not impaired, by phone or otherwise. The issues of texting and impaired operators are exclusively on the T, not the Commuter Rail, which is owned and operated by a different company.

The kid was impaired and standing between the rails on the track playing chicken with the train swinging his shirt in the air. A loco going 50+ mph in a high speed corridor like that cannot stop. The only way to have avoided it was the kid not going in front of the train to begin with. it's not the engineer's fault!

This is ridiculous. Stop focusing on ' oh he was drunk' blah blah blah. He died doing what he loved best hanging out with friends. I was one of his best friends and i hate that people were 'surprised' he was drinking. If you're old enough to be in the army, you're old enough to have a few drinks with friends. Stop remembering that he was drunk when he died.... remember that he was happy when he died.

@ Victoria, Its not ridiculous that they brought up that was drunk it was a fact. What you say is true if they can fight for our freedom then they should be able to have a drink. But Victoria this is were you are wrong. The fact is that he is still only 18 and he is a minor, The legal drinking age in mass in 21. So what he was going was still illegal. And this wasn’t the first time he had a run in with “fun” with his friends. He was also arrested for 3 counts of vandalism, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. So its that’s your idea of just having fun with friends, then the new friends you make could be the ones behind bars
