Tisei Outraises Tierney in Second Quarter
The Republican challenger seems to be on a streak.
Republican congressional candidate Richard Tisei has reason to smile this week, as he outraised incumbent Democratic Congressman John Tierney in the second quarter.
Tisei raised $568,871 in the quarter, compared to Tierney's haul of about $400,000.
"I'm simply amazed at the growth in support from individual donors throughout the district," Tisei said in a statement. "In my wildest dreams, I wouldn't have imagined that so many people would be supporting our message of change with their pocketbooks — particularly in these very tough economic times."
This marks the third quarter in a row Tisei has outraised Tierney — every quarter since announcing his candidacy in November.
Tierney finished the quarter with more than $700,000 on hand, but Tisei is catching up. And Tierney has raised about $1.3 million in this election cycle going back to January 2011, but Tisei has raised almost as much going back to just last November.
The Tierney campaign isn't expressing concern, though, and recently bought $350,000 of TV airtime for the weeks leading up to the election.
“The outpouring of support from grassroots donors in Massachusetts shows that we will have the resources to win this election, and the enthusiasm from volunteers and activists to mount a massive voter contact program," Tierney campaign manager Matt Robinson said in a statement.

Here's the story line: Tired ineffective congressman cannot be rescued by money from Unions and Party Machinery. Individual donors want a new congressman.

Jay states it well. What should really scare Tierney (and it does) is that Tisei's money is coming from individuals at a much higher rate than Tierney, who is getting over 40% of his money from PACs. PACs can try to buy votes, but they can't actually cast them. Buying 350k worth of airtime also shows that Tierney is concerned. That's close to his entire campaign spending from all of 2008.

From the Salem News
Tierney has received a total of $538,778 in PAC money, while Tisei has raised $144,425.
Tierney’s largest contributors are unions. He has received maximum $10,000 contributions from the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades; $10,000 from the Service Employees International Union; $10,000 from the Western Alliance for Farmworker Advocates; $10,000 from the Machinists Union; $10,000 from the International Union of Operating Engineers; and $10,000 from American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. Tierney also received $5,000 from The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, $5,000 from the United Steelworkers of America, $5,000 from the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, and $2,500 from the United Transportation Union.
Wow - I assume these are one time deals. Tisei should really outpace him in the 3rd Quarter. Though the DNC will step in on his behalf.
Poor Tierney, maybe he can get some of that Hollywood and Wall Street money that famed middle class warrior Liz Warren is soaking up.
