The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log:

Sunday, Jan. 20:

• At 7:04 p.m., police responded to a report of a lost child screaming on the 6th floor of a building on Highland Avenue. A responding officer reportedly found the child on the fifth floor being cared for by a family friend and the mother later confirmed that child got lost after getting on an elevator by herself.
• At 7:38 p.m., police responded to a report of an attempted vehicle break-in on Valley Street.
• At 7:42 p.m., a local resident entered the police station to report that their dog had been bitten by another dog. Police are investigating the incident.
• At 7:53 p.m., police responded to a disturbance on Margin Street. Kiara M. Ravelo, 20, of 15 Palmer St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon (knife).
• At 8:10 p.m., an Albion Street resident called police to report hearing "three loud bangs" in front of his house. Police checked the area but were unable to locate any type of disturbance. 
• At 8:23 p.m., police responded to Murphy's on Derby Street for a report of a possible stabbing. Responding officers spoke with a man who had been punched in the mouth during a fight and had a small laceration on his lip. When asked if he saw a weapon during the fight, the man said "no, but he must have used something to have cut my lip." Police were unable to locate anyone matching a description given by the victim.
• At 9:20 p.m., police responded to a reported disturbance on Highland Avenue. A person known to police will be summonsed to court on two counts of assault and battery.
• At 9:50 p.m., police responded to a disturbance at O'Neills on Washington Street. A man told police he believed another man was waiting for him outside of the bar and was planning to "pick a fight." The other man was placed into protective custody.
• At 11:48 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Ocean Avenue.
• At 11:52 p.m., police responded to a motor vehicle accident on North Street. Jeffrey S. Adkinson, 26, 3 Oak View Ave., Salem, was arrested on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

Monday, Jan. 21:

• At 12:52 a.m., police responded to a report of a possible dog struck by a motor vehicle on Highland Avenue. A dead raccoon was later removed from the roadway.
• At 7:56 a.m., police and fire units responded to a transformer explosion on Scotia Street. Residents on Scotia Street were temporarily without power. National Grid was notified.
• At 8:59 a.m., the manager at the Bridge Street Dunkin' Donuts told police an employee working the drive-thru window accepted a counterfeit $20.
• At 9:54 a.m., police received word that someone in a wheelchair was traveling in the roadway near the intersection of Highland Avenue and Hawthorne Square.
• At 10:31 a.m., a hypodermic needle was reportedly spotted on Highland Avenue. Responding officers were unable to find anything.
• At 11:56 a.m., a Pioneer Terrace woman called police to report that a suspicious woman was looking into her window.
• At 11:58 a.m., police responded to a past shoplifting at Arges Liquors on Boston Street. The store owner told police a man was caught on camera stealing a pack of cigarettes. The man was reportedly issued a no trespass order.
• At 3:07 p.m., police responded to a report of people out on the ice near Orne Street.
• At 3:26 p.m., police responded to a report of suspicious activity at the Museum Place Mall. A woman reportedly entered the men's restroom.
