TELL US: What Salem Spots Do You Love Most?
Do you agree with the list published yesterday? Where are Salem's hidden gems? Where does Salem shine?
Yesterday, Contributor William Legault shared the Salem spots he most loves to follow up on last week's more critical view of the downtown.
We want to know what you think of Legault's list and assessment.
Our "Voice in Salem" listed the following as the spots he believes best highlight Salem's positive attributes:
1. Private Garden at North and Lynde Streets
2. The Derby Street Waterfront
3. Traffic Islands
4. Front Street, Derby Square and Artists' Row
5. Pedestrian Mall Fountains
If you could make a list of the top five Salem spots, would they be the same as the the ones listed above? If not, what would they be?
Do you agree with Legault's assessment? Are you a fan of the spots listed including Artists' Row and the Pedestrian Mall Fountains?

My 5 favorite places in Salem: Green Lawn cemetery, any weather, any day; Furlong Park at high tide; private garden at 20 Dearborn Street; Winter Island Park; Conservation Trails behind Salem State Loring Ave. dorms. All free, all beautiful! Brenda Marean

I agree with Mr. Legault's favorite places; much better than his least favorites!!

1. The Essex Street Pedestrian Mall! So many people use it, one of two avenues where the stress of contending with automobiles is removed. And Yes, including the fountains, both works of art. I thought of reproducing the cobblestone map of Salem fountain in miniature with sugar cubes before we destroy it, but realized that even that would be a lot of work!
2. Winter Island Community Garden. So many visitors from elderly former Victory Gardeners from World War II, to school children who had never seen a food plant before come visit us and talk. I enjoy immensely growing my own healthy food and getting to know the neighbors and visitors.
3. Waikiki Beach. Lovely spot, and an underwater wonderland with so many plants and lobsters and occassionally schools of fish and the egrets that love them.

*the fountain with the cobblestone map of Salem
*occasionally.
4. The many fine restaurants!
5. Salem Common, especially the trees, and the poor dilapidated arch commemorating the Father of our country.
So many more favorite spots, but five will have to do for now.

1- The Essex Street pedestrian mall, you know the one the city is trying to destroy...
2- the beautiful fountains that will soon be destroyed
3- Howard street Cemetery, even though the city has locked it, preventing even us locals from visiting this beautiful place
4- pretty much everything that draws in tourists in October except of course for the Peabody Essex Museum...
5- Salem Beer Works, the only thing (as far as I know) the city isn't trying to get rid of

1. Essex St. Pedestrian Mall most especially during the summer when they used to have actual WATER!
2. Steve's Quality Market (a place where people actually know your name, have reasonable prices, great freshly prepared food and bread)!
3. Winter Island
4. Any parking space within a 15 minute walk from downtown--especially to get to City Hall or The Career Center--without a meter, resident only sign, or meter Reader with super human speed. Seriously, do they carry electronic devices that count down each meter to the second of expiration?
5. Any part of Salem not touched by Driscoll's Rein of Destruction and Glorification of Crime-Ridden Areas.
Someone should let her know that chomping on gum during a meeting that will be aired on community access television is really, really crass. Most especially when she is chomping the wad and speaking simultaneously.
