Spam Wood Derby Returns To Dodge Street

Unique event to be held for seventh year.

Are you looking for something different to do this weekend?

If so, mosey on down to this Sunday evening.

Owner Frank Presutti and his staff will oversee the Annual Spam Wood Derby. Yes, you read that right. Entrants will be given a kit containing a can of Spam, two sets of wheels, a butter knife, and some toothpicks. Using that kit, they will manufacture a small racing car to use in competition on a downhill track in a race against other Spam-based vehicles.

Presutti held the first event a few years ago inspired by a band singing a song called Meat Fort. That led to a discussion of things you could make with meat. The eventual result was the very first Spam Wood Derby.

Those interested in participating in the Derby can enter for one of the 20 available slots at Dodge Street at any time up to and including the day of the event.. The festivities will begin at 7 p.m. with the actual races slated for 9 p.m. Last year's defending champion, Liz from Panera Bread, is expected to be there in defense of her title.

There will be awards for the top three finishers and also for "Best in Show" and "Team Spirit."

It is not recommended that participants actually eat their Spam racing creations, but stranger things have been known to happen in this town. One year, race day was interrupted by a vegan protest.

The entry fee is $10 prior to Sunday and $15 for a race day entry.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your spam.
