I am only familiar with the roads I walk and bike. I would say the residential streets that are used as shortcuts are the biggest danger - especially to children and the elderly. Thank goodness for the pedestrian mall and bicycle paths and lane markers!

Webb Street is a 25 MPH zone and is in the mix for worst speeding issues. I'd like to know if SPD citations went up vs. previous period during first year of 'Get Fined.' Is there any 'bite' to the blue signs?

derby st between 5 and 8 am people fly down derby st. the worst is after the custom house where its one way. check it out chief put a cruiser down by the pig any morning and see for yourself..

We have placed a "Get Fined" sign all along Collins Street, at the corner of Collins and Lathrop and in our front yard, but there is no police presence, so why would a blue sign scare anybody. Our street is extremely dangerous.

For the most part there is to much traffic in Salem for people to speed but like any city there are trouble spots, North street being one of them.

Webb Street is horrific. Someone will get killed there.

Please stop treating Valley Street like a dragstrip. There are so many kids in the area.

The traffic problem gets worse and worse every year. As a result,cars are speeding through neighboorhoods making it even worse.Maybe if more focus was on the cut throughs, everybody would be stuck in traffic unable to speed !!!!

I agree Webb Street is bad, and the one way side streets from Bridge Street to the Salem Common are very bad also due to people trying to find free parking as they rush to catch the train...

until there is some sort of deterent to halt all this speeding all over salem its never going to end and only get worse. i myself would like to see police cars with laser cannons on the roof to blast the speeders once and for all.i'm sure people would wake up and take notice. beware phone yakkers ,texters and drinkers.

The city could also make a fortune in tickets from people driving the wrong way down Derby Street after the Customs House. And if you dare to point it out to the person, you get flipped off or cursed 99% of the time. Although, there was one very nice lost tourist who thanked me, turned around and went the right way. I was so stunned, I could hardly say "You're welcome".

Sargent to Felt, then they scream down any of the Ornes (Dearborne and Osborne included).

Orange Street, as short as it is, it's downhill and people get going too fast.

Cabbies like to cruise down Cabot and Hazel to save time between Lafayette and Canal, they fly over the hill near Roslyn and Holly way too fast!

I'm from Nahant. They are serious about enforcement out there. Lynn has a very interesting trick. Instead of parking the old cruisers in the LPD lots, they park them in residential areas to look like speed traps. The move them around regularly. It works, and probably keeps the residents a bit safer from breakins as well.

Raymond Rd. is an adorable resdential street (20 mph) however it also happens to be the cut through to Marblehead. Cars fly down this street even with a lighted sign indicating "your speed". There's a lot of kids and animals on this street, i've seen people going 40mph, way to fast for this neighborhood.

School Street is hilly, and has a few blind curves. We see and hear cars and trucks fly through all day long in both directions. There's a nasty bump in the road right in front of my house, and every time a speeding truck hits it, it scares the crap out of me! Unfortunately, I hear that sound many times a day, even from the back of the house. There's no reason that anyone has to drive that fast, especially on a side street, although School Street does get treated like a main thoroughfare.

Broad St gets a lot of speeders because it is used as a cut thru. We hear screeching tires constantly. The digital speed sign is useless.

How about...Highland Avenue between Willson Street/Cherry Hill Avenue and the Lynn line, both sides.

Traffic signals are not a deterrent because drivers blow right through the red lights as if they're not even there.

An increased police presence would certainly help...

it would be nice if the mayor took that 1.7 million for projected cruise ships and put it in the police department budget. then maybe chief tucker will have some funds for traffic enforcement.

I can't believe that Lafayette Street didn't make the list. Despite numerous deaths and many more injuries & all of the work that the city has done to curb speeding....the Marblehead end of Lafayette (dead man's curve) is still a very dangerous stretch of road. I wish I had a nickle for everytime I have pulled out of my driveway with no cars in sight and then suddenly have some idiot riding my bumper! The city has done many things to improve the speed but to no avail. I have said it many times but I will say it again, the only solution is to start writing speeding tickets...hit them in the pocketbook and it will improve!

Don't see alot of speeding, just backs up, slow tourists and people confused about the horrible roads. I find driving through Salem to be frustrating b/c it is so slow. So many lights and construction sites.

Flint st, between Federal and Essex. Everyone uses this as a short cut and tries to beat the red light. Crazy people always in a hurry. SLOW DOWN PLEASE.

And also drivers need to be taught the correct way to do a right on red. Just because you stopped behind a car at the light does not count. Drivers have to stop at the light before turning. Pedestrian crossing at Lafayette and Derby is crazy, drivers think its a free pass to go......surprised no one has been hit yet.

90% of the cars coming out of Marlborough Road take a "right on red" without stopping for the red. Nice place to have an unmarked stationed. They would take in a lot in fines...

salem is a traffic fine paradise with thousands of repeat offenders. we can only wish something gets done about it. plastic signs and electronic speed signs are no deterent like an officer pulling somebody over for traffic violations. this will also get the unlicesed.uninsured off the streets. then maybe in a decade or two our insurance rates might come down.

Salem has the worst drivers I've seen, ever. There is so much traffic, but for some reason most people still don't give themselves extra time, or something... You live here! You know there's going to be traffic, so relax and give yourself five extra minutes, geez. Every single day I see someone making crappy driving moves: speeding, tailgating, going through red lights (sometimes even after stopping and deciding they're too special to wait), blocking the box, laying on their horn for no reason, not stopping at stop signs... name a crappy move, and we all see in it Salem on a regular basis. The worst part is that the cops don't seem to care. Whether they think there are more important things to deal with in Salem, or whether it's not in their budget (giving more tickets would bring in more money, so that doesn't make sense), they do nothing. Why would anyone who already has issues with entitlement (the rules don't apply to "me") stop doing what their doing if there is never any punishment? Want people to stop blocking the box downtown at Washington and Derby? Don't put a stupid sign out that everyone will ignore, put a cop down there and start passing out some tickets! Want people to stop speeding down streets? Well, hey, maybe start giving out some tickets. It's really not that hard of a concept, so what's the problem?

North Salem is problematic! Incoming 128 traffic uses Tremont, Mason & Flint as quick cut-throughs into town - and all are horrrible speeding streets. Those escaping constant backups on North St or taking back roads from Beverly to into town use Balcomb, Symonds, School, Dunlap & Buffum as speedy cut-throughs. The whole area is turning into a highway. The police do come and tag speeders - during peak hours, but they can't be here all the time. This model - constantly utilizing our underfunded/understaffed police officers - simply isn't sustainable as a solution, as it's only effective while they are ticketing. Once they leave, the speeding continues, and at all hours of the evening. Interestingly, when the city undertook its NRCC traffic study to look at developments in the North River corridor expected to add 9000 daily trips to the area, they refused to include most of the problem speeding areas north of Mason St, despite resident requests to consider this entire problematic North Salem area. I'm really hoping the real estate market starts to recover, as we'd like to sell and get out of this neighborhood ASAP, before the traffic and speeding problems increase to the point where we won't able to attract buyers. Then we'll like to take our real estate tax dollars to a town where the needs of taxpaying home-owning residents are considered a priority - rather than developing things like cruise ship wharves, bike lanes, and other tourist-attracting, nice-to-have amenities.

Marlborough Road, yet another famous cut-through, is treated as a speedway during all times of the day, but especially at night. It is a curvy road and people come flying down and go off the road all the time. Just a few weeks ago another lovely driver woke us up at 1:00 as he plowed into a neighbor's retaining wall. Our own mini-van was totalled as it was parked in our driveway at 2 am Mother's Day weekend a few years ago. Thank God the van was parked where it was or that idiod driver would've been in my living room. Did I mention the other car three doors down that was flipped over and in flames a year or so ago? There have been countless other accidents---ALL due to speeding. I have personally my driveway as a hangout for the police department.....in a perfect spot to nab the speeders as they zip around two curves in the road. PLEASE, before someone dies on this road, PLEASE do something.

Another street that the college kids cut thru is Ocean Avenue. I see a lot of kids on that street and the cars go very fast. This has been an issue for years.

Not going to reiterate what I've said many times here before in detail, but if SPD would get out and enforce the laws, this behavior would change (or at least the city would reap the financial benefit).

The city also fails to make the most of the digital signs that measure speed by failing to post the speed limit anywhere near them. This happened on Lafayette (they eventually added it) and on Raymond Rd (where there is still no posted speed limit anywhere near the sign). Genius at work.

And since I brought it up, how can Lafayette Street not be on this poll? There have been more serious accidents/deaths as a result of driving accidents on Lafayette in the 15+ years I've lived here than I know of on any other Salem street.

It's a matter of having police available to monitor speed traps, when other more important problems, require them to respond. We can't increase the number of officers without paying for it. The most police I see are downtown and i don't see speeding in the downtown as a problem. The problem on Lafayette is due to the road being dangerous. It would not make sense to have an officer on Lafayette and Raymond when people are going 60 mph on Highland. Most of the accidents on laffayette have been late night and involved drinking

we've posted a Go Fast Get Fined sign on the lower end of Endicott St. people look at it and then increase their speed. as residents we are extremely concerned. we fear it's just a matter of time before someone gets hurt.
