UPDATED: Snow Day!

Welcome to "About Town," your guide to all that you need to know and all the juicy tidbits you may have missed.

Trash Delay

Well, the snow may be slowing down, but we'll see the effects of this storm for a while still. Due to the storm, trash and recycling pickup has been delayed by one day. If your regular trash day is Tuesday, it will now be Wednesday. If your regular pickup day is Wednesday, it will now be Thursday, etc.

Closed Down

Many locations have closed their doors for the day and evening. Make sure to call ahead before venturing out for any meetings or appointments. If you have any travel plans, think twice before heading out. The City of Salem has announced that the snow emergency will stay in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Sale

I just received a flyer in the mail. It says, "Good girls and boys get gifts for Christmas, smart girls and boys buy their own on sale after Christmas." Get smart and scan the aisles of after-Christmas merchandise for a deal. Holiday decorations are sure to be marked down. Take advantage, and stock up on lights, new ornaments and more. It's also a great time to stock up on non-perishable stocking stuffers. Check out AJ Wright, Target, and Special Thoughts Outlet.

An Easy Homemade Treat

Take advantage of all of this freshly fallen snow and whip yourself up a treat. Strap on your boots and head on out in search of Massachusetts-made maple syrup (Brookstone is my favorite). Warm up some maple syrup on the stove, and then drop a generous spoonful into a bowl of fresh snow. Mmm, it will create warm maple taffy.

Snow-Cone!

If you head out and gather some snow (make sure it is ALL white), you can also make a homemade snow-cone! Just walk out to your closest convenience store, Nicole's if you are on Essex Street, and stock up on a variety of juices. To create a rainbow snow-cone masterpiece, make sure the juices are all different colors — apple, fruit punch, grape.

Snow Day

I want to know what you are going to do on this fantastic snow day. Are you heading to The Common for a snow angel competition? To the woods for a snowball fight? To Mack Park for some epic sledding? What do you do on a snow day in Salem? Let me know and maybe I'll see you out and about.

Unfortunately, snow just doesn't taste good anymore. Considering the amount of pollution in the world, never mind the pollution in Salem (Dominion, cough cough), is it a good idea to recommend that readers eat snow?

This storm's roots were far away from Salem. I've been eating snow for years and am still of the belief that as long as you don't eat a square ton, or any of the yellow snow, you'll be just fine. Besides, there are items in many of our daily diets that have to be much worse for us.

You're right Jennifer! I think the snow had me down this morning, but after 2 days indoors with my 20 month old, I say "Let them eat snow!".

Not like it was in the White Mountauns of my childhood, wouldn't eat it now!

Meanwhile, walk to In A Pig's Eye for chowder!
