Sign Warns Zombies Are Coming, Several Car Windows Smashed

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police log.

The following is an excerpt from the log from Thursday afternoon through Sunday. Police responded to several reports of cars found with their back windows smashed. On Friday morning, police found a sign warning them of zombies.

  • At 5:39 p.m. Thursday, police helped two drivers exchange papers after a motor vehicle accident on Boston Street.
  • At 12:57 a.m. Friday, police received a call about a man screaming in a vehicle on Boston Street. When police arrived, the man told them he was on his cell phone talking to his friend.
  • At 1:13 a.m. Friday, police went to Washington Street where there was a report of a loud group on the corner. The group was gone when police arrived.
  • At 1:53 a.m. Friday, an officer on patrol found a group of males using a wire to try to gain access through a window. The person told the officer he locked his keys inside the car. The man was the owner of the vehicle.
  • A man was placed in protective custody after banging on a door on Burnside Street at 3:30 a.m. Friday.
  • At 4:40 a.m. Friday, an officer on patrol observed a city-owned electronic mobile sign on Canal Street near Broadway read: "Go Vikings!" "The End Is Near!" "Zombies Ahead, Run!" "Turn Back Now" and "You Just Lost The Game." Police noted in the log, "a quick check of the area showed no signs of zombie infestation." The message board had been reprogramed overnight by an unknown person. DPW was contacted to reprogram the sign.
  • At 7:33 a.m. Friday, a motor vehicle accident on the Bridge Street bypass road sent one person to the hospital. Both cars were towed from the scene.
  • At 8:30 a.m. Friday, police responded to a Highland Avenue parking lot for a report of a fist fight. No one was there when police arrived.
  • At 9:14 a.m. Friday, fresh graffiti was spotted on Clifton Avenue near the Forest River basketball courts.
  • At 11:41 a.m. Friday, an Essex Street woman told police she had left her apartment to go tanning that morning and when she returned the door was open. She was not sure if her boyfriend had left the door open.
  • At 12:17 p.m. Friday, a person driving on Highland Avenue believed his car was struck with a BB gun.
  • At 12:57 p.m. Friday, a West Terrace woman told police someone had jacked up the rear of her SUV and stole her tire overnight. Nothing else was touched or taken. Police took a report.
  • At 1:59 p.m. Friday, an Osgood Street resident called police to report he just got off the phone with a "very aggressive telemarketer." The telemarketer was allegedly doing work for diabetes. Police told the man to hang up next time.
  • At 2:19 p.m. Friday, police responded to Washington Square for a copper theft. A be on the lookout alert was sent out for a pickup truck. An unmarked police cruiser witnessed the truck heading down Lafayette Street with two 35-gallon barrels of copper tubing in the back. Michael F. Dunn, 28, 25 Milton Road, Reading, and Michael Maksou, 40, 67 Rand St., Revere, were arrested and charged with larceny over $250.
  • Undercover police officers witnessed a man carrying a bag with a crow bar sticking out of it on Lafayette Street with two other men at 2:46 p.m. Friday. Given the recent rash of motor vehicle and home break-ins, police said they decided to speak with the men. When police asked if the three men were OK, they had trouble answering the question. Police believed they were under the influence of narcotics given their "lethargy and pin point pupils." Police ran their names and found all three had active warrants. The three were transported to Salem Police Station where upon a search, a mint container was found to have heroin inside. Police also found three twists of heroin on each of them as well. One of the men also had pills on him. Steven M. Ring, 34, 3 Emily Lane, Georgetown, was arrested on two warrants for possession of a Class A substance with the intent to distribute and possession with intent to distribute in a school zone. Joseph Crasco, 24, 3 Emily Lane, Georgetown, was arrested on a warrant. George Edward Lewalski, 33, 19 Aberdeen Ave., Peabody, was arrested on a warrant.
  • At 5:46 p.m. Friday, police responded to a North Street gas station after a manager reported a red pickup truck pulled up, pumped $44 of gas and drove off without paying. The manager did get a license plate number, which came back to a man from Danvers. Salem Police contacted Danvers Police and told them to have the resident call the Salem Police Department. The investigation is ongoing.
  • At 6:33 p.m. Friday, a Sunset Road resident said she returned home and believed her home had been broken into. She told police the day before she had returned home and her kitchen door was "not entirely secure." The resident said she didn't think anything of it because nothing seemed to have been disturbed. Friday evening, she went looking for her silverware and found pieces missing. The resident told police 13 dinner forks, 11 dessert forks, six cream soup spoons, 24 teaspoons, four large vegetable serving spoons and 12 to 15 small specialty spoons were missing. 
  • At 7:04 p.m. Friday, a store on New Derby Street reported a larceny.
  • Police responded to Boston Street at 8:09 p.m. Friday for a report of a man slumped over the wheel. When police knocked on the window of the vehicle, the man woke up and told them he was waiting for his mother when he fell asleep. His mother arrived and drove the car away. 
  • At 11:40 p.m. Friday, police responded to Boston Street for a report of a breaking and entering in progress. When police arrived, they found a woman in the parking lot who said her ex-husband had forced his way into the apartment. Police found the man inside the apartment. David M. Clickstein, 26, 2 Amanda Way, Peabody, was charged with malicious destruction (door), assault and battery and disturbing the peace.
  • A resident of Lafayette Street called police at 1:02 a.m. Saturday after she heard people on her back porch. When she went to look, she saw four men on her porch. She told police they walked away once she looked at them.
  • At 8:37 a.m. Saturday, a Summer Street resident told police a package containing two tail lights was taken from his front steps.
  • At 9:33 a.m. Saturday, a man was found napping on a bench at the train station. Police told the man to wait for the train and no napping.
  • At 10 a.m. Saturday, police received a complaint about solicitors on Ocean Avenue. Police spoke with the man who said he was a Jehovah Witness and was  "spreading the word of God." Police told the man about the complaint and he told police he would "spread the word at a later date."
  • At 10:15 a.m. Saturday, a woman told police she was walking her dog on Flint Street on her way to Federal when she saw a man walking her way. She pulled her dog close to her and as the man got closer, he grabbed the woman by her jacket in the area of her chest. When she pulled away, the man started laughing and singing. The woman told police she picked up her dog and ran away, but when she looked back, the man was still laughing and singing. The woman ran home and called 911. Police caught up with the man in the parking lot of St. James. After properly identifying the man, Edward Ralph Walton, 34, 17 Harbor St., Salem, was arrested and charged with assault and battery of a person over 60.
  • At 12:57 p.m. Saturday, ammunition was found in Gallows Hill Park.
  • A resident of Hersey Street told police someone opened her car door and egged the interior overnight. Police advised the woman to lock her doors at night. 
  • A resident of Bridge Street called police at 4:02 p.m. Saturday to voice concern about squatters in a nearby building. The resident said the building is vacant and she sees people going in and out. Police did not find anyone inside, but will make extra checks.
  • At 6:53 p.m. Saturday, a Palmer Street resident told police a group of kids were throwing rocks at an injured bird. Officers witnessed a group of kids around an injured seagull and told the kids to leave the bird alone. The bird also left the area.
  • At 10:33 p.m. Saturday, police responded to an Essex Street bar for reports of people yelling and vomiting outside. Before police arrived, witnesses said the party left in a taxi.
  • A resident of Hersey Street said her car was keyed overnight. She found the damage at 12:21 a.m. Sunday. "Expletive you" was keyed into the woman's car door, according to the police log.
  • Police responded to Harbor Street at 12:40 a.m. Sunday for a disturbance. A man told police he was smoking outside when he witnessed a man walking down the street punching car windows. The man told the person to stop punching windows and then he came over and tried to punch him. The man who was previously smoking, put the man in a bear hug. The man's brother heard the commotion and ran outside to help. The man who was punching windows then kicked the brother in his side and as the brothers tried to get away, the man punched a plexiglass door, breaking it. The man then walked away. Police were not able to locate the man.
  • At 1:11 a.m. Sunday, a person leaving work at a downtown restaurant found the back window to their car had been smashed with a baseball. The baseball was found in the backseat. 
  • Police responded to several noise complaints early Sunday morning at St. James Church hall, Loring Avenue, Summit Street, Prescott Street and Perkins Street.
  • At 7:27 a.m. Sunday, a resident of Moffat Road reported the back window of a car had been smashed, but nothing taken.
  • A smashed window to a motor vehicle was also reported on Fairfield Street at 8:11 a.m. Sunday.
  • At 8:42 a.m. Sunday, a smashed car window was reported on Gardner Street.
  • At 11:20 a.m. Sunday, a resident of Lafayette Street said his car was stolen from Cedar Street sometime overnight. The car was recovered by State Police in Revere.
  • At 12:03 p.m. Sunday, a Grove Street resident reported a car window was smashed overnight. 
  • A smashed car window was also found on Riverbank Road at 12:58 p.m. Sunday.
  • A smashed car window was found on Leggs Hill Road at 1:49 p.m. Sunday.
  • At 2:19 p.m. Sunday, Animal Control was called for a possible rabid cat on Lafayette Street. The cat was gone when police arrived.

The following people were arrested over the weekend:

  • Samantha Ann Weisberg, 20, 17 Tanglewood Lane, Salem, was charged with assault and battery.
  • Kenny L. Hudson, 28, 16 Raind Circle, Danvers, was charged with operating with a revoked license, operating an unregistered vehicle and driving without a license.
  • Kathleen Burgess, 51, 286 Washington St., Salem, was arrested on a warrant. 
  • Ian Charles Colby, 33, 56 Jefferson Ave., Salem, was arrested on a warrant for domestic assault and battery.
  • Ricardo Dejesus Guzman, 37, 108 South Common, Lynn, was arrested and charged with driving after license suspension. 
  • Lamar C. Harris, 28, 64 Palmer St., Salem, was arrested on a warrant.
  • Alan Joel Maldonado, 19, Lafayette St., Salem, was arrested on a warrant.
  • Dontei R. Young, 29, 71 Harbor St., Salem, was arrested and charged with driving after license suspension and driving an unregistered vehicle.
  • Barry E. Allendorph, 41, 21 Osborne St., Salem, was arrested on a warrant.
  • Richard P. Bright, 22, 21 Lincoln Ave., Hamilton, was arrested on a warrant.
  • Justin Patrick Cunningham, 27, 15 Crosby St., Salem, was arrested and charged with driving after license suspension, speeding and failure to have vehicle inspected.
  • Sean W. Devoe, 29, 29 Hancock St., Salem, was arrested on two warrants.
