Salem Winter Farmers’ Market starts November 1
The Salem Farmers’ Market is moving into Old Town Hall for the first time. “We are excited to move into Old Town Hall November 1 and continue the Salem Farmers’ Market as a Winter Market,” states Jennifer Bell, organizer of the market. “People are looking for delicious, fresh, local produce year round and by extending the market through December they have more choices Downtown Salem.” The market will run eight weeks on Thursdays from 3 – 6 p.m. This is one hour less than the summer market which runs until 7 p.m. There will be one Tuesday market held Tuesday, November 20 since there will be no market on Thanksgiving.
Old Town Hall is adjacent to Derby Square where the summer market is held. The current summer market ends October 25 and there will be no break between the two markets. “The November 1 market is a Welcome Back for Residents”, states Bell, “many locals avoid Salem leading up to Halloween and this is another reason to return downtown. In addition to great shopping, the Winter Market provides a great gathering place for locals”
The market will be housed in Old Town Hall which was originally built as market building many years ago. The land was deeded to the city to be a marketplace. The market will showcase some of the summer market vendors and some new vendors as well. “Picture a crisp autumn day and the smell of hot cider or evergreen wreaths while shopping for seasonal vegetables and delicious pies among other items” describes Bell.
The Winter Market will include produce from local farms, fresh baked goods, flavored organic butter, mushrooms, soup, artisan soap and more. All items must be grown or produced in New England. There will be 20 vendors at the Winter Market. This year there some exciting new additions include a farm winery and a maple syrup vendor. Anticipated vendors at the 2012 Winter Market include:
FARM VENDORS (produce) :Clark Farm, Wally's Vegetables, Grants plants, Maitland Mountain Farm.
Non-Farm Vendors (not produce): When Pigs Fly, Seacoast Butters, Wolf Meadow, Shady Oaks Organics Mushrooms, Milk & Honey Green Grocer, Soluna Garden Farm, Soula's Salsa, Patty's Guacamole, the Phoenix School, Cape Cod Original Chowder, The Soup Guy, Mill River Winery, Shady Mountain Farm and Sweet Lydia's.
Skin Care Vendors: Salem Soapworks and Nunder Budder.
The market is made possible through the generous support of Mayor Kimberley Driscoll and the City of Salem as well as numerous volunteers and the dedicated Salem Farmers' Market Committee. The market participates in the SNAP program and will accept the EBT card at the market.
