At this time, authorities said a preliminary investigation headed by Trooper Daniel King indicates Hicks was driving the pickup westbound at a high rate of speed. The truck hit a jersey barrier and then veered "across the two westbound travel lanes," police said.

Authorities said the vehicle entered" the tunnel connecting the Sumner with the westbound side of Storrow Drive," where it hit another jersey barrier. Police said Hicks was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. After the driver's ejection, the car continued traveling 350 feet.

Hicks was the vehicle operator. There were no other occupants.

Police said the investigation into the circumstances of the crash is still under investigation.

The State Police did not say whether or not Hicks was wearing a seatbelt.

Police said the ramp was closed for a portion of time during the investigation.
