Salem Fire Chief Issues Mulch Reminder

Salem Fire Chief David Cody issued the following reminder about mulch safety.

Spring has sprung in Salem, which means many city residents will be heading outside to tackle their landscaping projects and Salem Fire Chief David Cody wants to make sure they do them safely.

A new regulation, 527 CMR 17.00, took effect last September and prohibits the spreading mulch within 18 inches of combustible exteriors of buildings.

Although residential buildings with six units or less are exempt from the regulation, Cody is urging all homeowners to adopt this new safety practice.

"Mulch is combustible and can be easily ignited causing many fires each year," Cody said in a release. "Using noncombustible mulch such as rock or pea stone around gas meters and within the first 18 inches of combustible material is the safest practice."
