Salem Already Has Halloween on the Brain
Theme already selected for Haunted Happening Grand Parade.
Believe it or not, Salem is already getting ready for October — the Salem Chamber of Commerce has announced World Animal Day has been selected for this year's 17th Haunted Happenings Grand Parade on Oct. 4
"World Animal Day is celebrated each year on Oct. 4. It started in Florence, Italy in 1931 at a convention of ecologists," Salem Chamber Executive Director Rinus Oosthoek wrote in a press release. "On this day, animal life in all its forms is celebrated, and special events are planned on locations all over the globe."
Oct. 4 was chosen for World Animal Day because it coincides with the feast day of patron saint and friend of animals, Francis of Assisi, according to the Salem Chamber.
Today, the holiday is one for "animal-lovers of all beliefs, nationalities and backgrounds," Oosthoek added.
According to the Chamber, "the choice of costumes for this year’s parade is endless, and schools and businesses are encouraged to expand on the theme’s positive message."
