Responders: Boston Street Bicycle Accident Could Have Been Worse

A 16-year-old bicyclist landed under a truck after an accident on Boston Street Wednesday afternoon.

Fire officials and a witness said , which left a bicyclist under a truck could have been much worse.

At approximately 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, emergency officials responded to the area of Boston and Federal streets after it was reported a pedestrian was under a truck.

Scanner reports indicated a 16-year-old male was then transported to .

Deputy Fire Chief Glen Beaudet said the victim "had been riding a bike when he was hit by a van." Beaudet said the bicyclist then "spun off the bike and landed under the truck." The bicyclist landed on his stomach "right up against the tires," Beaudet explained. 

If the extra wheel was down, for a full load, the deputy chief said the victim "might have been in trouble."

Retired Acting Chief Thomas Brophy said he was three cars behind the truck at the time of the of the accident. Brophy said he got out of the car when he saw the commotion. 

Someone was yelling "'He's under the truck; he's under the truck,'" he explained. 

Brophy called the , requested ALS (Advanced Life Support) and got down under the truck to see how could assist the victim while emergency responders were on their way. 

"He was alert," Brophy said. "He was just complaining about his back, leg and neck pain."
