What don't people understand. Stay off the railroad tracks or get hit by a train ! Seriously, I think I learned that as a young child. People don't seem to use the brain the good lord gave them !

I happen to know that these people were 'playing chicken' to see how close they could get to the train. The victim also had his shirt off at 10pm on a chilly night, which could indicate some sort of alcohol or drug use. This has nothing to do with walls or speed. It has to do with people not respecting the train tracks. No one thinks of the people who operate the train being impacted by someone being hit by their train.

@ Seth. It's always the trains fault when someone trespasses on the tracks, is that what I hear you saying? Lol. How about folks stay off the tracks!!! I bet that would resolve the situation real quick!

It is illegal to tresspass on RR tracks. These kids cut locks, cut fences, climb fences. Just how much can the T be expected to have to do before pefore personally accountability kicks in? Yes, they were playing chicken with the train, it was a terrible scene and his two friends are going to be carrying this the rest of their lives too. Tragic all around man.

This tragedy is absolutely devastating, having said that, its beyond frustrating because it was 100% preventable.

@ Seth...something needs to be done to fix it? I'd like to assume you are younger and just don't get it. Only so much can be done or even should be done to protect people from themselves. The ocean is deadly cold in the winter, you don't go jumping into it right? Why not? Sometimes in life doing stupid things is just Russian Roullette, sometimes the hammer falls on a loaded chamber. I don't think society owes anyone total protection from their own behavior. This is very sobering and tragic but not all that unexpected. If a lesson came out of things like this it would be meaningful, but it doesn't.

A death or injury is always tragic but If you have to climb over a 10 foot fence to get in the first hint should be that you are not supposed to be there. The MBTA is not responsible for people playing on the tracks. They put up barriers and notices. You are responsible for your own actions and need to be held accountable for such.

I am so sorry for the loss of your friend, Fred...but I hope this serves as a lesson to you and all younger folks that this type of dangerous, thrill seeking behavior often ends in the loss of a life that is dear to so many people. It also has a tragic impact on the innocent train personnel and passengers. And, there was no reason for it - had common sense prevailed.

Please remember a very young man has passed and many friends/family are left behind in gut wrenching pain. Stop commenting like it is JUST a movie/story!

I truly feel for the family over their loss. However, the area is clearly blocked to people crossing over the tracks. I see this time and time again at the Salem Depot where people climb the fence to get home (the complex that abuts the station).

However, the MBTA is not accountable for the stupidity of its riders and/or those people who take unnecessary risks. I would say uninformed... But it is pure folly to try to out race a train and or crossing the tracks. I am sure alcohol was involved nobody is that ignorant. If so, then well we know what the end result was for this young man.

Bad Train! Bad Train! It would be like blaming his parents for him being there.
