Hey Salem: Do You Trust the Weatherman?

This isn't the first time this winter that the National Weather Service has been off. Have you rearranged your plans thins winter only to find out the forecast was wrong?

Despite the huge snowbanks everywhere from the Blizzard of '13, Salem residents were preparing themselves for another couple inches of the white stuff Saturday night.

Salem even declared a snow emergency beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday and lasting into the day Sunday, which meant many of you were scrambling to find somewhere to put the car overnight.

The storm system ended up arriving at about 7:30 a.m. and had some of our readers sending in emails about whether or not a snow emergency was necessary Saturday night.

So - we have to ask: do you have faith in the weatherman?

Is there a local weather expert that you count on for information?

Have you rearranged your plans this winter only to have the forecast be wrong?

Let us know in the comments section below.

Generally, the meteorologists do a fine job preparing us for what's to come. But I think after the blizzard, and its consequential issues with plowing, safety and destruction, we're bound to see some over-hyped weather forecasts for the rest of the winter. Better safe than sorry I suppose.

Better a snow emergency parking ban then the absurd common sence limited parking. Asking people to use common sence when it comes to parking is like asking a child to use common sence when deciding how much candy to eat at Halloween. ...pointless.

I think that someone jumped the gun on this article! Maybe next time wait till the afternoon to write something like this since the arrival of the snow might be a wee delayed!
I think that the forecasters were dead on, last night on Ch.7 they said that the snow would start at 5 and be it heaviest between 8-12 with high winds. And the winds are whipping!

We were working off of The National Weather Service model, which I believe had it arriving earlier. I definitely jumped the gun!

Hey guys! I put this post up this morning at about 6 a.m., when there still were no flurries in the air, no snow on the ground and it appeared as though another winter storm had been a bust (I think we've had two similar let-downs already this winter.) Looking back outside now, I have to admit it is really coming down.

Well Owen you just got the taste of a weatherman. No matter how you call it people give you a hard time.

Let's lay off Owen Boss. The post was up before the snow, and importantly, the parking ban went into effect at 8pm -- 12 hours before a single flake appeared. That might have been where the city jumped the gun.

There were flurries downtown yesterday evening, in all fairness, just less than predicted for the first wave of this storm.

Our government is not suppose to cause pain to the people! At 10:30 am this sunday morning a city plow speeding up Grove st. on to Tremont st. bashed the whole snow bank from last weeks storm onto my sidewalk? i am posting pictures and the city will get copies!

I like to follow meteorologist David Epstein - he has a webpage and a fb page called Growing Wisdom. When a weather system is coming through, he gives frequent updates.

I may be the only one who is fine with with the instruction to "use your judgment" while parking. When you parallel park on a snowless day, you have to judge if your car can fit or not. It's the same thing post-blizzard: when you park, decide if you think other cars can still pass.

You sound like a responsible driver, Nancy, but unfortunately, there are some people whose judgement sucks, and they park their cars in front of a snowbank that has taken up 6 feet of a narrow street, which leaves room for only one car to go down the street...and the street is a busy street by the college and an elementary school!

Salem.patch is giving us a bad backcast on this and may suffer backlash. Most people are glad that they took care of their parking last evening rather leaving the job until Sunday morning.

The forecast-miss actually happened earlier in the week. On Wed & Thurs they were saying there'd be little-no snow this weekend....thought the storm would pass too far out to sea. In reality it tracked closer and we're in a mini-blizzard.

Joseph Edwards, If the City truck unnecessarily did this in front of your home and you were disabled like me you would be mad to! We hardly got snow from this storm and there was no need for the plow to bash last weeks storm onto the sidewalk right up to the wall in front of my house! why don't you check out the picture I posted and see if you would like this done to you!

I get my walk and drive plowed over all of the time, just like everybody else. I just don't make it a point to complain about the plow drivers doing what we pay them to do.

I prefer to err on the side of caution. Glad to get my car off the street last night. I know it's not easy for everyone. Bottom line: The weather in New England is difficult to predict therefore it gives us something to talk about!

It's not their job but not doing a job properly and intentionally bashing down snow banks from the prior storm on cleaned sidewalks is "reckless behavior!" Its UN-called for! We didn't get much snow, yet' the city plow bashed the entire snow bank on my sidewalk 3 feet deep! We pay the city for plowing! They should hire people that know how to plow the right way! Not cause more harm to the people!

Carolyn - Give your Ward Councillor a call. He may have better luck resolving your issue with the snow.

I sympathize Carolyn because I have a similar issue. The plows piled a mountain of snow on my corner then another truck piled another mountain on my cleaned sidewalk and on my front lawn. I have great neighbors who shovel for me because I'm disabled and I also paid to have someone clean the sidewalks. I have photos of the snow and the truck on my lawn dropping the snow. So far I have no clear answer about whether I can be fined for having an uncleared sidewalk. There's no way that piled up snow can be moved, shovels or a snowblower won't dent it. I thought I would take the photos to City Hall tomorrow and see exactly what the law is. Even if I was the Hulk and could move the snow there's no where for it to go except out into the street and that I do know is illegal.

Take a lot of pic's and send them to city hall . I am disabled to I've had 10 neck and back surgeries an need a knee replaced in the past 7 years. I have to clean the sidewalk myself because i have no choice and can't afford to pay another person to do it again. I just cleaned my sidewalk again and had to smash up 3 ft by 3 ft ice boulders that covered my sidewalk from the city truck , I had to break them in 4 pieces with a hammer to be able to roll them away. I made a path to the store parking lot on Tremont again so kids and the mailman don't get killed walking in the street up here. My poor neighbor is elderly and this time I can't help her, the ice boulders are pushed up to her stairway 3 ft high its sad. Linda its illegal for the city to dump on private property.

I understand that but the fines would add up at , is it $75.00 a day? If someone gets hurt on the sidewalk who gets sued, the homeowner or the city? Logically I would say since the city blocked the sidewalk they would be responsible but I'm not sure.

Linda I was told It was "both" equal responsibility of the city and the home owner if someone gets hurt on your sidewalk so check your walkway in the spring because if there are tree roots or up-heaves report them as many times as you can until they fix them because if you report the walkway and the city does nothing to fix it and someone falls "the city is now responsible!" You did your job to bring it to their attention and we don't have the right to fix a city sidewalk so the city becomes responsible If they do nothing to fix it after it was reported to them.

I just took before and after pictures out in front of my house. If the city trucks does what they did this morning "smashing last weeks storm snow banks on the walk again?" I am filing suit for pain and suffering! I would not have care if it were warmer out side because the snow would be easier to move but its freezing out and its not snow being dumped its huge ice boulders that not even a snow blower can break up. Check out the house at 66 Tremont its sad and wrong on the cities part!

Thank you for the information. I will complain and bring this to the city's attention. I do worry about liability, something non home owners don't have to worry about. I would also feel horrible if someone was hurt. I had a neighbor who slipped on a small patch of snow, probably ice beneath it, she fell backward and was seriously brain injured. To the poster who remarked about some snow on a sidewalk not being a big deal, I ask him to remember that when he's old and infirm and a mere walk down the block for some groceries is frightening.
