Murphy's Liquor License to Be Suspended 10 Days

The Salem Licensing Board voted to suspend Murphy's liquor licenses for 10 days.

The Salem Licensing Board handed down a stiff punishment Thursday to the owner of Murphy's Restaurant and Pub after police told board members that the bar had been repeatedly serving underage patrons.

The Derby Street bar was hit with a 10-day license suspension for serving alcohol to minors and over-serving customers, according to the Salem News.

The three allegations of serving underage patrons all involved women under 21, including one who was charged with drunken driving; one who was transported to the hospital; and a third who may have been sexually assaulted after drinking at the establishment, according to the Salem News story.

The suspension is scheduled to begin sometime after Thanksgiving.

Do you think the serving of underage patrons is a problem at other Salem establishments? Have you seen underage patrons getting in the front door and served at other downtown bars?

Let us know in the comments section below.

Of course its a problem. There are way to many bars in a small area. It will never change and I blame law makers not the Buisnesses itself.

While Salem lawmakers do share some blame for this problem the real problem is a business that feels it can do what it wants when it wants. I would like to see every small business in Salem do well but they must also pay the price when they break the rules. Underage drinking and over serving are not new problems, the bars know the rules and if they continually and knowingly break those rules they have to pay the price. That is part of the problem when businesses think they can get away with whatever they want. I hope Murphy's has learned their lesson and in the future will abide by the rules and have success.

instead of suspending the bar's license for 10 days, how about putting the owner of Murphy's (or any establishment) in the Middleton jail for ten days? maybe then they will make sure no-one is underage or over served?

I don't know anything about the current management, or what is presently going on. I can say from previous experience of working there that I am shocked they are able to operate as a business on any level. Food, liquor, or otherwise.

You moved next to what's been a bar for a very long time, into a building that was marketed as being in the middle of the action. Action is loud.

What an ignorant thing to say "shut your windows?" for god sakes! people have the right to the peaceful enjoyment of their homes and loud bars/ owners should be respectful of that fact! People try to conserve energy by shutting off air conditioner on a nice night and open the windows. When people have had enough they will petition to close the bars earlier etc. So the owners really need to work with their neighbors not annoy them!

The owner is male, Peter Kelly. He owns Murphy's and The Pickled Onion. Hasn't owned Paddy's in several years.

Dan - I happen to agree with you. They have placed outside speakers against city ordinances and had to remove them, and their patio is quite often not cleared out by the designated time. I feel for you living next to that establishment. Not to mention the very, very frequent habit of over serving and releasing loud, reckless patrons out into the street who are in no state of mind to end the party. The streets stay loud long after closing time, until police come and motivate them to go home.

When you choose to live in a downtown area, you expect a normal amount of urban noise like fire engines, sirens, traffic & street noise. I am often coming home from work around 1 a.m. and for years & years, what I have seen & heard around Murphy's at that time of night is excessive. Glad they got popped. Hoping they get shut down for good.

Our esteemed Mayor claims she wants to make Salem into the "go-to" city town on the North Shore. My question is: does she want to make it the "go-to" town on the North Shore for drinkers, drunks, vandals, reckless drivers, drug abusers, etc., etc., etc. Or does she want to make it the "go-to" town for tourism, shops, businesses, investors, and the people who come to make it a home for their families. If it's the latter, then perhaps she should look at her priorities...and the same goes for the ancient City Council who are still in the dark ages when it comes to looking to the future for this potentially vibrant city.

She can start by cleaning up all the trash there is directly behind city hall. After raising perking fees and Question 4 passing, the city owes the people at least cleanliness.

That building has been a bar/restaurant for as long as I can remember and I have been here 35 years. It would be great if Murphy's was a fine dining establishment or at least serving a different type of clientele but its not and hasn't been for a long time.
Dan, didn't you check out the bar next door before you bought? I would have gone down there on a Friday and Saturday night,at the very least you could have yelped it.

Dan,
when we moved in 7 years ago, the noise was NORMAL. Since Murphys opened
around APRIL 2008, (that means almost 5, not 3 and 1/2), it has been unbearable. We have a right to get a nights sleep.
ALL the downtown residents have the same rights as everyone else. This isnt the only "problem area"

I delivered concrete to our building during construction and I have been a north shore resident for 24 years and know the area well. At the time we bought here Roosevelts was closed and the developer said it was going to be a Redbones. It sat for 2 years, no Redbones. Then Murphy's arrived, and the rest is history. I have nothing against the owner personally, but his business plan has disrupted many lives, as he goes home to an uninterupted sleep each night.

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooo Dan,
First of all id like to say i'm very glad you finally get to have a great night sleep after 5 years of loud "Unbearable" nights. 300,000 dollars for a noisy condo must be very rough. Wait....you know whats probably more rough....the 50 plus employees that arent as financialy stable as you who have rent to pay, car payments, mortgages, child support, student loans, and food to provide for their family. I'm not talking about nightlife....I'm talking about the everyday open to close employees that happen to be very good friends of mine. You talk about a bar/club in the middle of Salem Ma being obnoxious and loud.....guess what....its freaking downtown Salem! Tourist destination spot...busiest town outside of Boston on the North Shore! 7 years ago when you moved to Salem, what exactly did you think it was gonna be like?? All i see on these websites is people bitching selfishly about things like this. What your pretty much saying by not wanting so many bars/restaurants/clubs in the area is that you want all the poeple in each establishment unemployed, eventually leading to more foreclosures, people on welfare, and young kids not being able to pay off their student loans. Stop being selfish.

Hey Kim , your boss makes enough money to pay all of you. He should have plenty of money for sound proofing and paying bouncers that can keep the party inside the bar not migrating out into the streets at all hours. When people get ;loud and obnoxious you can only guess that they have been "over served" and are drunk!
