Man Crushed at Sewage Plant

Fire officials said the man was able to free himself.

Fire officials said a man was crushed in an industrial accident Thursday at the South Essex Sewerage Plant on Fort Avenue after he got stuck between a forklift and a wall.

The call came in just after 4 p.m.

Deputy Fire Chief Gerry Giunta said the man was operating a lift truck at the time of the accident.

"It was the type you walk behind, not the one you drive," Giunta explained. While walking behind the equipment, Giunta said the lift didn't stop and the man was pinned between the equipment and a large metal tote containing various chemicals.

Giunta said it was difficult for the lift to stop on time due to the moisture and humidity on the floor.

"The handle that operates the piece of equipment was up against his chest," Giunta said.

The deputy chief said the man was able to free himself before emergency personnel arrived. He was treated on scene by the and Atlantic Ambulance.

"He was conscious and alert when transported [to the hospital]," Giunta said. "Hopefully he'll be okay. You never know with crushing injuries."
