Man Arrested After Gun Scare at Camp Naumkeag

Maxim Zdyrko of Salem was arrested in connection with the incident.

Police say a Salem man was arrested after a gun scare at a city day camp on Friday morning.

Maxim Zdyrko, 36, of 21 Essex St. was arrested on a disturbing the peace charge after police received a call at 10:49 a.m. about a suspicious man possibly carrying a handgun near Camp Naumkeag.

Police said a lifeguard reported Zdyrko was allegedly carrying a rifle on the beach while there were 122 children present at the YMCA's Young Explorers day camp.

Staff members were able to move the children away from the beach area, according to police.

When officers arrived, they found Zdyrko on rocks on the edge of the water, police reported. Officers said a BB gun was located next to Zdyrko in the bushes.

Police said Zdyrko was arrested for disturbing the peace because "everybody at the beach was alarmed and afraid at [the] scene."

Even if it is not posted NO HUNTING, and is not within 500(?) yards of a dwelling, what does one hunt or "fowl" on Dead Horse Beach in summer - and with such a tiny "caliber"? I think the market for feathers has flown.

does this mean if I legally carry my handgun and people panic I can be arrested for disturbing the peace? I guess any excuse will do

More likely than not, there was some 'nuance' here that led to the charge. Was the guy cooperative? Was he belligerent? Why did he hide the gun? And there were kids nearby.

I agree with you, actually, but something like this comes under "discretion", I think.

That Essex St address appears in the police stories frequently.

That's the place across from Walyos, I remember the burglar living there arrested earlier this year, but it wasn't until I googled that I found out about the drug dealer last summer with the firearms and ammunition. I'd heard a rumor once that it was a halfway house, any ideas?
