Police said they arrested a man who was caught during a break-in by a homeowner and chased through several South Salem streets Monday afternoon.

At 2:40 p.m., the Salem Police Department responded to a 911 call from a home owner who reported he was pursuing a male party he caught inside his home on upper Jefferson Ave. 

The owner chased the suspect, Darren LeBrun, 45, of 290 Chestnut S. in Lynn, through numerous streets in South Salem — including behind Bertini’s, across Broadway behind the SSU Sports Complex, through the SSU parking lot to Linden Street and then Hazel Street.

LeBrun was observed shedding his clothing, most likely in an attempt to avoid capture as well as discard stolen property from the house break.

The clothing and property were recovered.

The victim was able to keep police up-to-date with his location via his 911 cell phone call.

All available officers assisted in the pursuit and capture of LeBrun to include Officers Kathleen Costa, Thomas Cunningham, Gary LeBrun (no relation) under the direction of Patrol Supervisor Robert Carter.

Darren LeBrun is charged with one count each of breaking and entering in the daytime to commit a felony, larceny of property (over $250) and possession of burglarious tools.
