UPDATED: Love That Dirty Water!

Welcome to "About Town," your guide to all that you need to know and all the juicy tidbits you may have missed.

Protect Those Puppy Paws

I had assumed that the sand that they provided to residents free of charge in barrels around the city was sand only. Well, you know what happens when you assume. We carefully covered the sidewalk in front of our house with sand to prevent any and all passersby from slipping. When my poor dog Abigail came out front to join us, she immediately started hopping and crying because of the salt mixed into the sand. Be careful walking your pet along the de-iced sidewalks. Dog booties may be in order.

I'm Martha Stewart

I'm having a dinner party tonight, which means I get to flex my inner Martha Stewart. No proper dinner party would be complete without a loaf of exceptionally chewy, crusty, golden brown bread. On my way home today, I am going to swing by A&J King for that perfect loaf, the Epi. I may be a bit like Martha Stewart, but I'm not sure I want to tackle bread making just yet.

Special Appearance

If you are a true make-up and skin care fanatic, you will know the name Mathilde Thomas. The co-founder of Caudalie will make an appearance at Rouge Cosmetics on Jan. 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. Stop in to meet the pro, receive special treatments, gifts with purchase, and fun refreshments.

Dirty Water

If for a moment on Friday you experience low water pressure or brown water running from your taps, don't worry. The City will be conducting hydrant flow tests near Congress, Bridge and Lynch streets. To make this task a bit smoother for the crews, make sure you dig out the hydrants in front of your home.

Stock Up

I'm a small business owner, which means I go through office supplies like there is no tomorrow. I just got an email from Staples — they are having a huge sale on ink for your printer. If you have an HP printer the deals are even bigger. The Staples in Salem also has a super big and super new print and copy center.

School's Out

With school out for so many days in a row, you are going to need something to do with the kids. Frankenstein's Art has all sorts of crafts and projects to keep the little ones busy. My cousins also love their solar-powered grasshoppers!
