First phase of ferry wharf project could be completed by Memorial Day.

Construction at the has been underway for several weeks and the first phase of the project should be completed in time for the start of ferry service on May 27.

As part of a $20 million project to , the first phase of the project entails laying utility lines, construction of a seawall, and upgrading the ferry terminal building to include a restroom and waiting area.

Construction at the site began , when the ferry was closed.

Kathleen Wynn, deputy planning director for the city, said the project is progressing on schedule. 

"They have finished the seawall and so far it's on schedule," Wynn said.

The next phase of the project, beginning next winter, involves extension of the pier and harbor dredging.

That portion of the project is being funded by $3.1 million in federal and state grants. Last week, the state signed off on $600,000 of the funding.

Wynn said the parking lot will be graded and lined with parking spots and should reopen for residential use by Memorial Day.
