Green Land Cafe to Change Hands

A date has not yet been set for the opening of the new restaurant, which will be called Opus, but the transfer of the liquor license was given the green light by the Licensing Board.

Though a timeline isn't yet set, there will be some changes at the Green Land Cafe at some point.

On Thursday, the Licensing Board gave the green light for the transfer of the Green Land Cafe's liquor license to applicant Nolo Opus.

The applicant told the board in addition to the restaurant they may have the opportunity to bump out to accommodate a function hall in an adjoining space in the future.

The new restaurant, which will be called Opus, will keep the same manager as the current manager at the Green Land Cafe.

Licensing Board Investigator Det. Peter Baglioni of the Salem Police Department told the Board he had done a compliance check of the restaurant and met with the current manager. Baglioni said the restaurant was "in full compliance" and he was "very impressed."

But why? Greenland is fine as it is.

This has me really upset. I felt so fortunate to have found a beautiful restaurant that provided beautiful, local food. I've always told all of our friends that Greenland was our favorite restaurant, and recommended it to people as well. To see them sellout to corporate makes me sad. This is not what Salem should be about...selling off to the highest bidder, who apparently is this Latitude Co....who also managed to buy out the landlords who (currently) own the space that houses Urban Elements. Now they have to find a new home as well. It's just disgusting. I will spend my money elsewhere.

the Serenitee Restaurant Group owns several farm-to-table, local, fresh, sustainable restaurants on the Northshore. they have a track record of running very successful restaurants!
i mean, it's not like Applebee's or the Olive Garden is going into the space! that would be just plain insulting & gross.
Greenland's food has always been mediocre. the service has always been fair to poor. take a look at Yelp, Trip Advisor, etc.
the who owns that whole block of storefronts? he's a businessman! he's in business to make money.
the current owner of Greenland Cafe? i've heard that he is a silver-spoon-fed, spoiled rich kid who has a Daddy with deep pockets.
the owners of Serenitee Restaurant Group? one is a Chef. they've worked hard to build an empire.
Mayor Kim is personally helping UE find a new home. i hope they stay in Salem.

Hi Adrienne, My name is Joe Giacalone and I am the majority owner who started Green Land Cafe along with minority partner Paul Bolden. Your comment "the current owner of Greenland Cafe? I’ve heard that he is a silver-spoon-fed, spoiled rich kid who has a Daddy with deep pockets”. This statement is so wrong and could not be further from the truth. Very few people were aware I owned this business. I actually grew up in Medford; my father has been disabled since I was a young kid and because of this I grew up very poor (no deep pockets from Dad). I put myself through college and I make a living as a painting contractor. I have worked my ass off and invested in Green Land Café because I loved the location and we were doing something different. I am proud of what we created and have tons of great Yelp reviews and Facebook fans. The only reason I am selling is because I need to devote my time to my core business. We sold to Serenitee Restaurant Group because the time was right for me and they are a local group. Next time you post comments please get your facts straight.

Adrienne,

Serenitee Restaurant Group ain't all that. Sustainable: farm raised salmon? Tex mex, sushi, BBQ, ...whatever. They are all over the place and do it OK. But it's the 'burbs so what should I expect. It's not horrible but you make it out to seem like it's Chez Panisse. I've eaten at a bunch of their restaurants. It's OK.

Also, I've met the owner of Green Land. Once or maybe twice. He's a pretty stand up guy. I grew up with rich people and I can tell you he is a pretty blue collar, working class guy--in a good way. At least that's the impression I got.

If you want some good food that is farm to table check out Bondir, Cragie, Market at Lobster Cove, West Bridge, 62 on wharf, 5 Corners. Serenitee's stuff is respectable for the market up here but it's not really in the same class.

This was my favorite restaurant in the history of Salem. I was a patron from the beginning and watched it get better and better. My husband and I were just there a few weekends ago and noted that the food and service were better than ever. We brought guests who had never been and they loved everything, too. For one thing, they made FANTASTIC mixed drinks that proved someone there had their mixology study down. Joe, I wish you all the best and although I'm really sad to see Greenland go, I'm thankful for all the great memories I've made there. RIP St. Germain's Arousal and the best caesar salad I've ever had.

Joe,
I wish you the best. I had received a gift certificate from a dear friend a while back who is no longer with us based on the rave reviews you received. I know it would be hard for you to day but do you think they will honor the gift certificate or will we have to eat it and lose out ? I wish I had met you. To run a restaurant of top caliber and not to have start out in the business is something you should be proud of. Good luck on your ventures and hope you have a change of heart and come back to the restaurant business.
