Friendship of Salem Restoration Moving Along
The Friendship of Salem will remain docked at Derby Wharf for at least another year.

Earlier this week, we received an email from a city resident who was curious about how the Friendship of Salem restoration effort was going.

What we found was that despite chilly temperatures, workers charged with repairing the damaged hull of the Friendship of Salem were still plugging away at Derby Wharf earlier this week.
The painstaking process of gluing together damaged sections of the ship's hull has officials with the Salem Maritime Historic Site telling visitors that the ship probably won't set sail again until 2014.
"We're coming to grips with the fact that we won't be sailing at all this year," Friendship mate John Newman said Tuesday afternoon. "The only reason we'll take her out this year is if we take her somewhere for more maintenance."

What I would like to know is why it needed repairs again so shortly after being away for months in Maine just last year? Did something hit it?

My understanding is that in order to have the ship available to tourists over the summer, they opted to bring her back and complete the rest of the restoration at Derby Wharf, rather than in Maine.

WHT DOES THE FRIENDSHIP HAVE TO BE RESTORED SO SOON AFTER BEING BUILT. THE SHIP IS NOT THAT OLD. WHATS THE PROBLEM? IMPROPER MAINTENENCE? WRONG MATERIALS USED? WHATS THE DEAL?
I HAVE FRIENDS THAT HAVE WOODEN BOATS THAT WERE BUILT IN THE 1930'S AND 40'S AND HAVE LESS PROBLEMS THAN THIS SHIP DOES. WHATS GOING ON HERE?

Update on the repairs are going to be disclosed in detail this Thursday. HDSNA has sent this announcement for all interested in the ships progress report. "An outdoor evening lecture detailing the repairs to the Friendship of Salem at Salem Maritime National Historic Site. This free, 90-minute program will be held on Derby Wharf beginning at 7pm on May 16th. Attendees will see an illustrated slideshow and lecture by Friendship Captain Jeremy Bumagin, Mate John Pydynkowski and Mate John Newman detailing the wide variety of repair work conducted over the last few years. A question and answer session and a physical tour of the ship will follow the lecture." This is the first public forum on this topic, all who are interested are urged to attend.
