Five Things to Know: St. Joseph's Last Day

Here are the five things you need to know before you start your day in Salem.

Today is Tuesday, Jan. 15, and here are the five things you need to know:

1. It should be another pleasant day in Salem. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect it to be mostly sunny, with a high near 41. Tonight should be mostly cloudy, with a low around 29. (sunrise, 7:10 a.m.; low tide, 7:22 a.m.; high tide, 1:39 p.m.; sunset, 4:35 p.m.)

2. If you're hoping to get one final look at the front of St. Joseph's Church on Lafayette Street, you'll want to stop by today. The front of the church is expected to be torn down this morning. Click Here for video footage of demolition crews at work last week.

3. The Salem Parks and Recreation Commission will meet tonight at the Senior Center on Broad Street. The meeting, scheduled to begin at 6:45 p.m. at 5 Broad St., is expected to feature a discussion with the Federal Neighborhood Association regarding outdoor lighting, according to the posted agenda.

4. Looking for something fun to do in downtown Salem tonight? Tavern in the Square will be hosting Stump Trivia starting at 9 p.m. Click Here for all the details.

5. Today in History: On Jan. 15, 1777, during the Revolutionary War, New Connecticut (present-day Vermont) declared its independence.

I miss the announcement of new Patch blog posts being included in the "Five Things," and was wondering if anyone else felt the same? The announcements reminded me to scroll down and read the Salem-focused blogs. Any chance of bringing that feature back? Thanks, Patch!

Today is also the last day for those businesses in town with seasonal liquor licenses. It is the closing night for the Lobster Shanty as well as the last night to get hard liquor at Howlin' Wolf, 62 on Wharf and Polonia; they will all convert back to beer & wine liceses tomorrow. ( I hope I haven't forgotten anyone)
