Hey Salem, Do You Worry About Your Packages?

With a recent package theft making headlines in Salem, we have to ask: do you worry about the safety of your packages?

The story of Bill Bushong's stolen birdcage and the video surveillance he captured of a woman stealing a package from his front porch was featured on a handful of local news stations last night and has captured the attention of city residents and many of our readers.

So, we have to ask: do you regularly have packages delivered to or picked up from your front doorstep in Salem?

Do you ever worry that the items you order won't be there when you get home?

Do incidents like the recent theft on Mason Street have you mulling over the installation of surveillance equipment of your own?

How can similar thefts be prevented in the future?

Let us know in the comments section below.

A detective called me this morning and said that they have several leads that they would check into today, but I have not heard anything else... yet :)

I had a package (a textbook) stolen off my porch last fall. Bummer. Can't imagine the thief was too excited when they opened it.

They likely sold it for decent money though, school books are usually very expensive.

One package mishap several years ago was enough for me, and now I have all packages shipped to my work address.

I have always had things shipped to my work address. For this exact reason. I'm never home to receive a package, and I don't want it laying around on my front stairs. I also live in a 3 floor multifamily house with college kids downstairs. I don't trust them as far as I can throw them.

Last summer I found a package for my neighbor, ripped open and then tossed into my bushes. Apparently the thief was unhappy with the boring contents inside. I agree, anything of value I have shipped to work.

I rent a mailbox at the UPS store and have my packages delivered there. It's kind of expensive, but worth the peace of mind knowing there's someone there to sign for it and that my packages are safe until I can pick them up.

There are many large birdcages for sale on Craigslist, including one "brand new; bought and assembled it; decided it was too big."

You do! Awesome! I don't feel comfortable putting my number up here, but the detective that is looking into this is Detective Sano. If you call Salem non-emergency line (978-744-1212), she will be happy to get it! Thank you!!!

I wish somebody would ATTEMPT to steal a package from my porch. My german shepherd would have taught this woman a lesson about stealing things from people's properties.

Ya but, Dog has to be out on the porch. Besides, you would get arrested for assault and battery by a canine. Sent to jail. End up in court. Up against a strict judge who sticks up for the rights of a thief, and you end up with 1 year in prison doing hard labor. Just Saying.
