Chihuahuas Up For Adoption at NEAS Thanks to Actress Katherine Heigl

A special thanks to the Northeast Animal Shelter and Stephen Oakes for the following information and photos.

On Friday, April 1, a crew of Chihuahuas arrived at the Northeast Animal Shelter (NEAS) from a Los Angeles-based shelter called Kinder 4 Rescue.

Northeast Animal Shelter Communications Director Stephen Oakes said costs from the transport were paid by the Heigl Foundation, which was founded by actress Katherine Heigl in honor of her late brother. The organization is run by Heigl's mother.

Oakes said many people adopt Chihuahuas on impulse, based on depictions they see on television or on film. Oftentimes, people don't fully consider the commitment and care necessary before they adopt Chihuahuas, Oakes said. "This has resulted in a large number of Chihuahuas filling shelters in California," he added.

This is not the first time the shelter has taken in Chihuahuas through the program. Oakes said 21 dogs came to NEAS to find homes through the program in 2010.

The Chihuahuas are currently up for adoption. Call 978-745-9888
or visit northeastanimalshelter.org for adoption information.
