As we continue to reflect on the year that was 2012 in Salem, we can't help but notice that a bunch of new local businesses have opened their doors over the last 12 months.
Salem Businesses the Opened in 2012
Flying Saucer Pizza: When The Upper Crust closed in February, many Salem foodies were left wondering what would become of the downtown space. In May, the business reopened as the Flying Saucer. Steve Feldmann, owner of the nearby Gulu Gulu Cafe, opened the gourmet pizza place with a 60's sci-fi theme.
Life Alive Cafe: Life Alive Cafe, a self-proclaimed urban oasis and organic cafe opened in the Essex Street space formerly occupied by Coven in May. The mission of the business is to "feed the vitality of the world…one meal at a time," according to the Life Alive website.
Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt: In June, Salem residents swarmed the grand opening of the city's new Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt shop at the corner of Lafayette and New Derby streets. Owner David Pierre opened the yogurt chain's Lafayette Street location, which was formerly the site of West Coast Video.
Wynott's Wands: Everything about Wynott's Wands is straight out of a Harry Potter novel. From the store's cashier, decked out from head to toe like Albus Dumbledore, to the rows of magic wands at the ready, exact replicas of those found for sale in the book series' famed Diagon Alley. The wand shop opened on Pickering Wharf in September.
Every Occasion Boutique: Every Occasion Boutique opened on Wharf Street in mid-April. The boutique offers a wide variety of affordable and unique fashion jewelry, clothing and accessories.
3 Potato 4: Also in May, 3 Potato 4 opened for business. The business, located in Museum Place Mall, specializes in "organic potato-fries," according to the business Facebook page and "thrives in [a] creative approach toward organic sustainability."
Village Tavern Grill & Oyster Bar: The Village Tavern Grill & Oyster Bar opened this fall in the space on the pedestrian mall where Lakay Island was previously located. Owner Arthur Ingemi has previous restaurant ownership experience in Salem, and brought three full time managers on board in the hopes of offering a multifaceted experience that will have an emphasis on value and be "very, very comfortable" for all patrons.
Salem Businesses Coming in 2013
Lilith's Lair: Lilith's Lair, which will pride itself as the "Home of the Authentic Salem Spell Candles" will be opening soon on Wharf Street. The shop will be opened by Salem newcomers Anthony Dibenedetto and his wife, Gina, and will offer Lenox, Waterford and Royal Albert fine collectibles at clearance prices.
