Boston Magazine Ranks Salem Among Best Places to Buy First Home

Salem's low housing prices and charming harbor are among the reasons Boston Magazine named the city one of the best places to live in 2013.

A recent Boston Magazine article about house hunting in the Boston area ranked Salem among the best places to buy a home in 2013.

The article notes that Salem's median home price is $249,900, with a one-year change of -3.4%; and points to planned increases in ferry service and our new five-story downtown parking garage as reasons why Salem would be a good fit for someone working in the big city.

Other communities making the magazine's list were Medford, Boxford, Western Southie and Dorchester.

To bad the "Taxes" get raised to give city official's raises, while the average family struggles to pay them in this bad economy!.

Good example why I stopped subscribing. Wouldn't good schools and low crime be important attributes? Guess not.

Was the survey before or after the CPA passed? And was it before Tom Furey ( you know the Councillor who has never paid a real estate tax bill nor owns a computer) proposed a pay raise for himself and the Mayor?

I bought my first home in Salem, and my mortgage rate has gone up every year solely because Salem keeps raising property taxes.

If your mortgage rate keeps going up you don't have a fixed rate or a very good mortgage company.

Roxie, I remember getting a letter, why my "property tax" went up. It was because some idiot overpaid for a small house without any parking across from mine? I don't think its fair to the home owner who's house has never been updated or changed in the past 20 years!

Do any of you people actually live in Salem? Rather than being such Negative Nancies, why don't you just move? Boston Magazine was spot-on.

Yes,I have lived in Salem all my life. Just because I disagree with a magazine article about the city I live in doesn't mean I should move. Boston Magazine was waaayyyy off.
