Best Of Patch: Who Makes the Best Subs in Town?

Please vote for your favorite sandwich place by taking our poll and by clicking on the directory link and writing a short review.

Our inaugural Best of Patch contest kicks off this week with food on our minds.

Do you have a favorite sub shop in town?

Here are some of places we love, but if we're leaving one off of the list, please let us know in the comments and we'll add it:

Voting in the poll below is open until 9 a.m. Friday. Because this poll is not scientific, it is not the sole consideration in choosing a winner. The winner will be determined our Patch editors, based on poll results and reviews on Patch Places. Please vote only once per survey.

To review a restaurant, click on its name in the list above, and add your rating and review.

If you're a business owner, be sure to claim your listing.

King's has improved a lot. I don't care if you've been fooled a billion times. You're bloody bonkers if you think an opinion on previous issues that HAVE BEEN CHANGED. Should still be said in current topics on it. If you haven't tried the service recently, your outdated. Oh & if I went by your logic. Then I would not have returned to NORTH HOUSE OF PIZZA (just want to get the name right, since I'm not quite sure what your talking about. I live off North Street & North Street Pizza doesn't exist. I hope you didn't think you voted for it in the poll) you know how the place I'm specifying is under new management & such ? Kind of like King's?
But my bad, since clearly your just going to be illogical and hypocritical while you don't know what your talking about. Okay. I'll be leaving now. Thanks, hope y'all have a great night. I know mine's been wonderful. Dinner from King's was fabulous, as it has been as of late.

Years ago Salem Super Sub had two location Boston and Essex and Riley Plaza. When the rotary was removed the owner thought the Riley Plaza location would never survive so he closed it and kept the Boston st( Lenas today). We would love to have you guys stop in! Since it is the off season on Pickering Wharf, we have hours from 10am to 5pm and we stay open a little later on the weekend. Its truly a seasonable area on the wharf. Check out our menu, we are definitely not a "sub shop", no steak & cheese, no beef 3way. We do specialty sandwiches like "The Presidente" (grilled chicken, homemade pesto, provolone and ranch), The Tom Brady (turkey, ham, pesto American), The Veginator (featured in The Boston Globe, grilled eggplant, zucchini, roasted red peppers, olive oil and tons of other veggies). They are mostly served on a toasted, seeded Italian roll......soft and delicious! We have a nice variety of sandwiches, come on down and check it out!!!

Jared Robinson

So, I was looking at the Kings website and saw this tidbit
"Many of the Greek-Americans who worked for Bill and Bob's went out on their own, and now that second tier of shops also has offshoots. Eleni Koudanis owns Nick's Famous Roast Beef with her husband, Nikos, her brother Nick Markos, and his wife, Georgia. ''My brother Nick was working for Bill and Bob's," says Eleni. ''And we thought it sounded like a good idea to do our own thing." The family opened Nick's in 1975. Over the years, both couples' children have worked at the busy shop, as have siblings, cousins, and friends.

Their staff, too, branched out with their own roast beef joints. Over time, ''a lot of ex-employees went on to open their own places," says Eleni

One Nick's graduate is John Kalantzis, who owns King's Famous Roast Beef in Salem."

I knew their sauce and beef tasted awfully familiar. not exact, but similar.

For Kings you mean? I certainly see it. The vulgar and 'over-exuberant' fans of Kings have totally turned me off... It's obvious there is at LEAST one person who has registered more than one name on here to vote and comment.

Whether it's an employee or just a rabid fan... it still makes the company seem shady to me and I'm totally rethinking giving them any business from now on.

Maybe someone should get in touch with John Kalantzis and explain what people are doing "in the name of his company".

I can understand people enjoying some food and businesses... but to be inappropriate and vulgar towards others is ridiculous.

It makes a lot of sense to me as to why a place, which is fairly unknown, like the hungry whale is putting up high numbers. If you forced everyone in town to vote obviously these numbers would be very different. but as someone who recently starting going to the hungry whale its not hard to understand. The owners of this are two young, energetic and honest working guys. They might not have the constant flow such as a place like kings but man its almost like a hangout spot. hell i felt like i had known justin for years the first time we met. people stay there after they finish the sandwich to hangout from what i saw. also they do a ton of social media advertising from what he says. that right their explains the votes. Kings owners are probably old-school and don't even know what facebook and twitter are. THey are an upstart business who are busting their ass to spread the word and its obviously working. A place like kings doesn't need necessarily need or gain much form winning this, where as for a new and upcoming place like the whale this would be huge for them. I don't think they are "rigging" it i think they just understand the value and are doing a great job with social media at spreading the word. sorry for the winded response. as long as a local company wins and not subway ill be happy! im just happy to live in an area with so many great options!

john

1:58 am on Wednesday, February 29, 2012

As I have said,if you can pump up the numbers on this poll (and you can) it makes the poll useless. This poll has done nothing but created a small blood bath among Salem businesses. Is this really constructive?

I guess I missed the comments that were removed. I would like to point out Gene started it by a negative post about the help at Kings. The owner has no idea this has been going on. My guess is they are just young fans of Kings. The owner of Kings is a great guy and is constantly supporting Schools, Fundraisers and Non-profits, The Owner Johnny K is an asset for the city of Salem!

I voted for The Hungry Whale. I've been to some of the other places on the list and while ive never had a bad experience at the places I have gone to,, I was also never blown overly impressed by anything I've ordered either. I choose the hungry whale because the owners/staff are always nice, the place is always clean and the food is always fresh! I went there this summer , a few times a week, solely for the caprese sanwhich. I liked that they offer fresh and unique vegetarian options. I'm also a bug ice cream fan and I like that I can grab a sanwhich and an ice cream at the same time.

John, we are constantly changing our menu to satisfy our customers needs. Currently we offer all of our menu items on either a braided & seeded Italian roll or a wrap. We also offer a standard "sub" roll, however we would much rather you enjoy our selections on a toasted italian roll, it's simply much better. Please feel free to stop down anytime, we would love to have you.

Fair enough you do sell subs. Good luck with your business.
