A Very Veggie Salem Thanksgiving
Several local businesses cater to vegetarian palates for the holidays
Salem residents looking to find vegetarian and vegan options for their Thanksgiving meals will be happy to know several downtown businesses are stepping up to the plate.
Milk and Honey
Milk and Honey, the green grocer that specializes in locally sourced and organic goods at 32 Essex St., has the ever-popular Tofurky brand available, along with a variety of vegetarian and vegan items to make a traditional meal complete.
"We have a huge clientele that is always asking for vegan brands," said owner Sharon Driscoll.
Customers embarking on their Thanksgiving dinner preparation can find an array of fresh local organic squash, potatoes, and greens; organic cranberry sauce and boxed stuffing mix; bulk beans and organic spices; and vegan cheeses like Daiya, known for its melt-ability. Other dairy-free but dairy-like items are also available at Milk and Honey.
Coven
Coven, the artisanal market and cafe on Essex Street, has put together a 'Vegan Thanksgiving Menu' for take-out with all the trimmings.
"We wanted to provide a hearty selection that provides the flavors of the season" said Jen Vourlos, co-owner. Jen and her partner Rob Trezza said they have noticed a growing clientele asking for vegetarian products.
Customers can choose a full meal or certain sides and desserts depending on their needs. The savory menu includes a choice of carrot fennel soup or cream of pumpkin with curried pecans. Sides include herb bread stuffing, roasted garlic mashed potatoes and green beans with toasted walnuts, to name a few. Main courses consist of either vegan mushroom vegetable pot pie or sweet potato lasagna with vegan béchamel sauce. The meal is complete with either a pumpkin chocolate bread pudding or apple crisp. Customers are asked to place their orders by Tuesday Nov. 23 by calling 978-741-0500 or emailing jen@covensalem.com.
Nathaniel's
Salemites who prefer to dine out can enjoy a buffet-style Thanksgiving dinner at Nathaniel's restaurant in the historic Hawthorne Hotel from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Though traditional fare, such as turkey, is served, the menu does include many vegetarian items such as pumpkin raviolis, maple-roasted turnip, parsnip, carrot and toasted pumpkin seed salad. A variety of savory vegetable dishes including chipotle-butternut squash gratin, which are meat-free, are also on the lineup. To see a full menu, visit the restaurant Web site.
