Lucy the Cat, well-known in Salem, passed away Sunday.

Local residents took to Facebook Sunday to share their feelings about the recent passing of Lucy the Cat, who was a well-known and much-loved fixture at the Barking Cat Pet Emporium on Essex Street.

Though most people who knew him will remember him for his good looks and mellow demeanor, Lucy most recently made headlines in the spring of 2011, when he was catnapped and later rescued by the Salem police.

Have a fond memory of Lucy? Did you or someone you know get to know him over the years? Feel free to share a farewell message with your neighbors in the comments section below.

Lucy would often greet me on my way to work along Essex St while he patiently waited for the store to open. It was always a favorite part of my commute! And my 7 year old daughter adored Lucy. I don't know how I'll ever break it to her. :(

RIP Lucy. I actually met him for the first time just a couple weeks ago, after wanting to for awhile. I was walking on Essex Street and he was in one of the parking lots. I couldn't resist petting him and he seemed so happy. He was adorable.

I will miss seeing posts of Lucy on the Barking Cat's FB page. With a name like Lucy, I thought it was a she cat...but everyone keeps saying "he"? RIP Lucy, he or she, and say hi to my Harry at the Rainbow Bridge!!

Lucy, such a wonderful cat.
Fave memory: he would meow and purr and roll... convinced I had the power to open the doors to Barking Cat when they were closed. :) He made my husband and I smile many times, he will be missed.

Lucy always asked us to let him in as we walked by on our way to the Y on Sat/Sun mornings. He never quite understood that all people didn't have a key to the store...we just saw him last weekend and gave him attention...glad we got to say "bye" we'll really miss him...
